06.09.2026

Autumn in Minho offers a vibrant display of colours, flavours and scents. As the leaves begin to turn, the landscape transforms into a beautiful autumn canvas; in the vineyards the harvest is in full swing, and along the streets the aroma of roasted chestnuts drifts through the air. Experience autumn in Minho and let yourself be enchanted by its beauty.

Autumn Coziness

With a cup of coffee on the veranda, gentle morning mist over the valleys and a quiet sense of calm

Some places carry a special kind of magic — an atmosphere and a light that instantly settles you into a state of harmony. Minho is one of those places.

Choose whether you want to wake up to views of mountains and valleys, or to the wild Atlantic. Distances here are short, and during your stay you'll have the chance to take in and experience the region's varied landscapes dressed in autumn colours.

Start your day by stepping outside and breathing in the fresh morning air, tinged with salt from the Atlantic. Watch the morning mist roll across the river valleys before the sun's warmth clears the sky to a brilliant blue. And when evening falls and the sun sinks toward the horizon, bring a blanket and enjoy the sunset from the beach — sitting on sand still warm from the day's sun, with the sound of waves in the background.

Temperatures remain warm and pleasant well into late October, and with summer tourists long gone you'll have beaches, viewpoints, waterfalls and cultural sights almost entirely to yourself — a true luxury.

Autumn activities

Wine harvest, hiking, surfing and much more

For many, the wine harvest is one of the year's great highlights. In September the grapes are ripe and ready to be picked, and as a visitor you can join the harvest at several charming family-run estates. During a harvest day you'll help pick grapes, learn about the process from fruit to wine, and if you're lucky, you might even get to try grape‑treading in the traditional granite lagares. The day often ends with a homemade lunch in the garden, featuring a selection of local products. The bread, broa de milho, is a hearty, rustic maize bread typical of Minho, often served with fresh cheeses, homemade chouriço, olive oil and sweet grapes. Sitting here with a chilled glass of vinho verde, overlooking the vines and the estate together with your travel companions, is a wonderful way to end a day among the vineyards.

If you enjoy outdoor activities, this time of year is absolutely perfect. Hikes in Peneda‑Gerês National Park, coastal bike rides or a day of great surf — autumn offers fantastic conditions for active travellers, with pleasant temperatures, excellent waves and quieter cycling paths than in summer.

Autumn Flavours

Warming stews, hearty soups and roasted chestnuts

Minho's cuisine is traditionally generous and rooted in rural cooking and fishing traditions.

In autumn, many of the region's most typical dishes return to the table. After a refreshing autumn walk, the cabbage soup Caldo Verde warms beautifully. Made with a local kale variety and a little chouriço, it's a simple yet flavourful dish — perfect when temperatures begin to drop and you want something comforting after a day outdoors. Other hearty dishes worth trying include Feijoada minhota, a rich bean and meat stew, and Cozido à Portuguesa, a classic stew of meats, sausages and vegetables.

During autumn you'll see roasted chestnuts sold on city streets and squares. Chestnuts are also used in cooking — in soups (Sopa de Castanha), as a side dish and even in desserts. The smell of roasted chestnuts is, for many, synonymous with autumn. If you've never tried them, you should buy a paper cone from a local vendor — a lovely way to experience everyday local life.

This beloved nut is so cherished in Minho that every November people celebrate Magusto, a festive tradition in its honour. Families, friends and neighbours gather around open fires, roast chestnuts and share a few glasses of vinho verde. If you have the chance to join, it's a unique way to get to know the locals and their traditions.

Beyond grapes, autumn is also the season for harvesting many other wonderful crops. Fruit trees hang heavy with apples, pears and figs, and in the fields pumpkins are ready to be turned into Doce de abóbora, a sweet pumpkin preserve that pairs beautifully with cheese. Quince marmalade, Doce de Marmelo, is another favourite — especially with a good piece of goat cheese and some fresh bread.
