Why northern Portugal?

Portugal and surfing go hand in hand. Here, waves are part of everyday life and the ocean is woven into the local identity. Maybe you've heard of — or even visited — Peniche, Ericeira or iconic Nazaré? But there's a gem in Portugal that remains relatively undiscovered by Scandinavian surfers: Costa Verde, the Green Coast. Fewer tourists, less crowding, fantastic conditions and an active surf community await you here.

The 180 km stretch of Costa Verde runs from the Spanish border in the north down to Portugal's second‑largest city, Porto, in the south. The coastline is shaped by long sandy beaches, soft dunes and river mouths that create a varied marine environment. In several places, cliffs and piers form unique wave setups close to the towns.

Surfers are met with sweeping views, kilometres of sandy bottoms and conditions that suit all levels — all year round. The Atlantic's open exposure delivers consistent beach breaks with both right‑ and left‑handers, and for those who don't mind slightly cooler water, the surf experience is as adventurous as it is calming.

And as if that weren't enough, you can also combine your surf trip with other water activities, cycling, hiking, ATV or running — along the coast or through the greenery of Peneda‑Gerês National Park.

What are you waiting for?

For whom?

Northern Portugal offers great surf for all levels and is one of Europe's most consistent surf destinations, thanks to its open coastline that receives swell from every direction — you're rarely without options here!

For beginners, summer is the ideal season — not only because the water is at its warmest, but also because the weather is stable and the waves are at their gentlest. For more experienced surfers, spring and autumn are perfect, while advanced surfers will find late autumn and winter to be the best time of year, as long as you're comfortable with colder water, stronger currents and bigger waves.

When to go?

In northern Portugal you can surf all year round, although it's wise to time your visit according to your level and the conditions each season brings. There are small variations between different spots, but in general, September is the very best month. The water is at its warmest (18–20°C), the autumn swell has started to roll in, and the summer tourists have gone home. You'll have the beaches to yourself and can fully enjoy the waves and the beautiful surroundings.

For experienced surfers seeking a real challenge, we recommend visiting in winter. The waves are bigger and offer true, adrenaline‑filled conditions.
