Peneda-Gerês National Park 🌳
With its varied landscapes and magical views, this is every cyclist's dream.
Peneda-Gerês National Park, Portugal's only national park, offers waterfalls, lush greenery, mountains, rich flora and fauna, Neolithic remains, and Roman bridges. It's an ancient granite landscape that provides fantastic opportunities for cycling, including an almost endless network of century‑old shepherd trails.
Visiting the historic villages feels like stepping back in time. Don't miss Lindoso, with its medieval castle and Portugal's best‑preserved cluster of espigueiros (granite granaries), or Soajo, with its charming village centre filled with stone houses and narrow lanes — and of course, all the natural swimming pools.
A great tip is to end your adventure by enjoying the sunset from one of the many beautiful mountain peaks — an unforgettable experience.

Along the scenic Lima Valley 🍇
Through vineyards, eucalyptus forests and Portugal's oldest town
Just half an hour inland from Viana do Castelo, you reach the Lima Valley. A bike ride along the Lima River takes you past vineyards, forests and small farms, across stone bridges, to watermills and chapels that reflect a cultural heritage still woven into everyday life. From the hilltops, the views stretch across the entire valley — the river shimmering in the light, villages climbing the slopes, and mountains framing the horizon. It's a route as beautiful as it is calming, a day filled with nature, tradition and the gentle rhythm that makes Minho so irresistible.
In the heart of the valley lies Ponte de Lima, Portugal's oldest town, where the iconic Roman bridge spans the river like a link between past and present. This is a lively and picturesque town with blooming squares, cafés and markets. Here you get a taste of the real Portugal, far from crowds and souvenir shops — and it's the perfect place to stop for a treat. All around, the Vinho Verde vineyards spread out, giving the landscape its characteristic lushness.
If you're interested in wine, a visit to one of the small, family‑run vineyards is highly recommended. The owner is often your guide, showing you the vines, sharing the family's story and, of course, leading you through a tasting of the delicious, chilled wine in the unbelievably beautiful surroundings.
In the Lima Valley, history meets mythology: the Romans believed the river was Lethe, the river of forgetfulness, and for a long time they feared crossing it, afraid they would lose their memories. Today, it's quite the opposite — this is a place where memories are made.

Along the Costa Verde⚓️
Discover Portugal's green coast – on two wheels and at your own pace
Costa Verde, the Green Coast, is the name given to the stretch of shoreline between the mouth of the Douro River in Porto and the mouth of the Minho River, which also marks the border with Spain in the north.
Cycling along the Atlantic takes you through fishing villages, past long sandy beaches, with the scent of pine trees in the air and sand dunes forming a natural barrier between land and sea.
Here, you ride on dedicated cycling paths, with surfaces ranging from gravel and asphalt to wooden boardwalks. Choose one or several sections of the route, or cycle the entire stretch — your pace and level set the tone. It's the perfect ride for anyone seeking sea breeze, fresh air and unforgettable coastal views.
One of the highlights along the way is Viana do Castelo, one of Portugal's most beautiful coastal towns, with the Lima River, historic quarters and the Santa Luzia basilica watching over the city. And why not end a wonderful day on the bike with a delicious Bola de Berlim, a sugar‑dusted bun filled with creamy vanilla custard?

Rota 777 🚴♂️
For the dedicated cyclist seeking a true challenge
Cycling through northern Portugal's four regions — Minho, Douro, Porto and Trás‑os‑Montes — this circular route takes you on an unbeatable journey through nature, villages, cities, and along the sea, rivers and cascading waterfalls. And as if that weren't enough, you'll pass six protected natural areas and no fewer than five UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The route follows country roads, with the northern and eastern sections being the least trafficked. Along the coast and near larger towns, traffic can be more intense, but one thing is consistent throughout Rota 777: it only follows secondary roads, avoiding the main flow of car traffic.
The terrain is varied. You'll find the biggest elevation changes in the north and east, while the stretch along the Atlantic coast is relatively flat. The landscape is constantly shifting, taking you through farmland, vineyards and sandy beaches, as well as mountain passes, river valleys and lush eucalyptus forests.
The 777 km can be cycled in individual stages or completed in full. If you decide to take on the entire route, we highly recommend getting the Rota Norte passport. With it, you can collect stamps along the way — and return home with a fun keepsake from an unforgettable cycling adventure.
