The Portuguese pilgrim routes

30.07.2026

There are pilgrim routes – and then there are the Portuguese paths to Santiago de Compostela. Whether you travel on foot or by bike, your journey will be framed by the soft Atlantic light, sleepy coastal villages, Minho's lush landscapes, and above all, the Portuguese hospitality that greets you long before you've laced up your boots.

Walking in Portugal is different from the more well‑known Spanish and French routes. The pace is gentler, the scenery more varied, and the number of pilgrims fewer. You have more space to walk in your own rhythm, to pause at a beach, to talk to locals, and to let the landscape shape your day. At the same time, the infrastructure is excellent, the waymarking clear, and the atmosphere warm and welcoming. It's a journey where sea, history, and culture meet – and where every stage feels like its own little story.

Portugal offers two main routes leading north towards Santiago de Compostela: the Caminho Português Central, which winds through the inland, and the Caminho Português da Costa, which follows the Atlantic coast. Both routes meet in Galicia, end at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, and promise a memorable experience.

Caminho Português Central - the inland route

The Caminho Português Central is the classic route, the one that has carried pilgrims for centuries through Portugal's interior landscapes. It begins in Lisbon and heads north via Santarém, Tomar, Coimbra and Porto before continuing through Minho and onward into Galicia. This is a path layered with history: Roman roads, ancient bridges, and medieval town centres.

From Porto, the route continues through Barcelos, Ponte de Lima and Rubiães before crossing the border at Valença/Tui. Here the landscape becomes greener and more rolling, leading you through forests and small villages. The terrain is varied but not technically difficult, and the way is well marked with the iconic yellow arrows.

This is the route for travellers who want to experience Portugal's cultural heritage up close: monasteries, churches, historic centres, and the gentle rhythm of inland communities. It is also the busier of the two Portuguese routes, meaning you often meet other pilgrims and feel a strong sense of camaraderie.

Caminho Português da Costa - the coastal route

The Caminho Português da Costa is the coastal alternative that follows the Atlantic from Porto, through Minho, all the way to the border at Caminha. Here you walk along beaches, cliffs, fishing villages and wooden boardwalks that wind through the sand dunes.

From Porto, the route passes Matosinhos, Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim before continuing north towards Esposende, Viana do Castelo and Caminha. From here, you cross the Minho River by boat and enter Galicia, where the path joins the central route near Redondela.

The coastal route is slightly longer than the inland variant, but the terrain is flatter and often easier to walk. It's perfect for travellers who love the sea, enjoy a fresh breeze and appreciate the everyday life of small fishing communities. At the same time, it still offers historical highlights – old lighthouses, forts and traditional villages where pilgrims have always been part of the landscape.
